About Laura Juárez, PA-C
Laura Juárez, PA-C, DPA, MPAS, MPH, specializes in cardiovascular and thoracic (CVT) surgery at Oklahoma Heart Institute. Her professional areas of interest include clinical practice, research on health disparities and advocating for access to medical care.
Laura’s journey to becoming a physician’s assistant came about while she was pursuing her master’s degree in public health. She said, “I discovered the physician associate profession and realized I could combine my passion for health with direct patient care. As a PA with a background in public health, I can incorporate preventive care and lifestyle modifications into patient counseling, effectively getting the best of both worlds.”
Her passion for surgery and the opportunity to combine many of her other interests led her to work in CVT surgery. She said, “I love surgery because it allows me to make a tangible and immediate impact on patients' lives. I enjoy the intricate technical work in the operating room (OR) as well as being present and comforting with patients outside the OR.”
When it comes to building relationships with patients, Laura understands the intimidations that come with surgery. She adds, “To ease their concerns, I dedicate time preoperatively to answer questions, provide explanations and even draw visual aids to illustrate. My hope is this demystifies the process and makes patients feel empowered and confident in their care.”
“One of my favorite pieces of advice to patients is that small, consistent changes really do impact long-term health so every healthy change matters,” Laura said.
Outside of work, Laura enjoys spending time with her dachshunds. She said they keep her busy being a dog mom.
