Paul D. Robison, M.D., MMM, CPE, FACS, FACC, FACCP, specializes in cardiovascular and thoracic (CVT) surgery at Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI). His professional areas of interest include heart and lung surgery and peripheral vascular surgery. He is also a U.S. Navy veteran.

Dr. Robison’s inspiration to pursue a career in medicine started with his father, who was also a surgeon. Dr. Robison always knew he wanted to become a surgeon because of his father but it was the experience of a close loss that reminded him of his purpose. He said, “I never wanted to be anything else except a surgeon and following the death of my oldest brother from congenital heart disease, a heart surgeon.”

When seeing patients, Dr. Robison makes an effort to try and get to know each person and their life situation. He said, “I want to know their story and create a pathway to a healthier life, and that may not involve surgery at all.” Everyone has their own unique experiences and Dr. Robison wants to learn why patients are coming to see him and what can be accomplished from the care he can provide. He said, “Heart surgery frequently is more involved than patients realize, and the procedures have real risks. I have to create real bonds of trust and realistic expectations for what my patients can achieve.”

Dr. Robison likes to remind his patients that, “You are more than the sum of your parts. You are here to get better, and there may be several ways to get to the same place of healing. My job is to talk to you about your choices; your job is to listen and make informed decisions about your care.”

Outside of work, Dr. Robison enjoys hanging out and being surrounded by his family. He said, “I am deeply involved in my family and getting my adult kids and grandkids on a great life path.”
