About Ashley Mathis Cooper, APRN-CNP
Ashley Mathis Cooper, APRN-CNP, DNP, specializes in cardiovascular and thoracic (CVT) surgery at Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI).
Ashley's inspiration to pursue a career in medicine began not long after graduating from high school. She said, "I began working as a nurse's aide at a rural hospital shortly after high school. After beginning work as a nurse's aide, I developed an aspiration to work with the geriatric population. While working as an aide, I realized that I wanted to help patients at a higher level. I was then able to attend LPN (licensed practical nurse) school, followed by RN (registered nurse) and NP school (nurse practitioner).”
After spending nearly 11 years of her career working in the emergency department, she has learned the importance of establishing a good relationship with patients. She adds, “In building relationships with my patients, I always try to treat every individual with the respect that I would expect my family members to receive. I believe that interacting with patients on a personal level not only improves patient-provider communication and continuity but also encourages patient confidence, ultimately leading to greater participation in their overall health and goals.”
Outside of work Ashley enjoys being outside and spending time with family and friends.
