Dr. Mahaldar’s inspiration to pursue a career in medicine started in life with her family’s emphasis on education and community service. These are two values she carried with her and evolved throughout her education. She said, “During my academic journey, I discovered my passion for medicine, which aligns perfectly with my desire to make a positive impact. The medical field offers a unique blend of intellectual challenge and opportunities for meaningful social contributions, which deeply resonates with me and drives my pursuit of a career in medicine.”

“My journey to choosing endocrinology as my specialty began during my third year of medical school, where I developed a strong interest in internal medicine. My residency at the University of Oklahoma provided invaluable experience in managing complex endocrinology patients, exposing me to the intricate mechanisms and immunological aspects of endocrine disorders. I found myself drawn to the challenges and rewards of treating patients with conditions like uncontrolled diabetes and thyroid diseases.” She adds, “As an internist at a tertiary care hospital, I saw firsthand the significance of comprehensive outpatient care in preventing hospitalizations and improving patient outcomes. This experience reinforced my passion for endocrinology.”

When it comes to connecting with her patients, she emphasizes good listening, interpersonal skills and compassion. She said, “These are essential in caring for patients and their families, especially when they are stressed by illness. Clear and appropriate communication about the plan of care is key to fostering trust and understanding.”

Some advice that Dr. Mahaldar likes to give her patients is, “Let’s prioritize health, and happiness will follow.” “Preventive care, medication adherence, open communication, regular check-ups and lifestyle changes are the key mantras,” she said.
