Kelsey Thoman, PA-C, specializes in general cardiology at Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI). “I spent the first five years of my career working in primary care. When I decided to make a change, I spent time thinking about the conditions I most enjoyed treating. I love that cardiology involves both lifestyle and medical management, and that I can really allow patients to live longer and healthier lives,” she said.
Kelsey knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine. “I always grew up loving biology classes, so I knew my path would involve that,” she said. “When I had family members interact with the health system, I realized I loved the role of diagnosing and treating patients.”
Now, as a cardiology provider and when it comes to building relationships with patients, she tries to focus on the patient’s goals for their health care journey. Kelsey also points out how important it is that her patients are being listened to. “Knowing you are being heard is fundamental to building a relationship and that can only happen when both parties are on the same page,” she said.
Some of Kelsey’s favorite advice she likes to share with her patients is to focus on what their goals are for their life. “My goal is to help them achieve that by optimizing their health,” she said.
When Kelsey isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son outside, cooking and trying new restaurants.
Kelsey’s education includes:
• Master’s degree in physician assistant (PA) studies at the University of Oklahoma, 2017
• Bachelor’s degree in biology at Austin College in Texas, 2014
